Day Passes and Dance Passes

You asked for it and now we're giving it to you! Day Passes for Lindyfest workshops will now be available . The day passes are $100 and include the workshops only. You will only be able to purchase day passes on site.

Dance passes for the entire weekend are also available for $100 for the entire weekend. and will be sold only at the door.

Individual dance prices are below:

$15-Thursday 9pm-3am
$45-Friday 9pm-5am
$20-Afterhours 1-5am
$45-Saturday 9pm-5am
$20-Afterhours 2-5am
$10-Sunday 8:00pm-3am

Dances are included in the price of the full weekend workshop. If you registered for the full weekend you do not need to purchase a dance pass.

Don't miss the Sunset Shuffle

Elaine Hewlet from Dallas is working hard to preserve a regional dance called The Sunset Shuffle, a popular dance created in Dallas, Texas in the 1940's. Make sure to stop by her class at Lindyfest and pick up the steps.

Organizer's Roundtable

Mark Kapner, organizer of Swing Out New Hampshire, is going to lead an informal discussion group about the ins and outs of planning a successful event. Topics may include event insurance, dealing with ASCAP, forming non-profits, coping with e ver changing college memberships and more

Look for this class offering in your LIndyfest schedule.

Beginner's Track

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest weekend.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $60 and includes 8 hours of instruction at the InterContinental Hotel March 17-18th, 2012.

Lindyfest: March 15-18th 2012!

It's time to gear up for Lindyfest! As always, the Houston Swing Dance Society is proud to present our 2012 Lindyfest instructors: Dawn Hampton, Chazz Young, Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Virginie Jensen, Steven Mitchell, Skye Humphries, Marie Mattsson, Max Pitruzzella, Annie Trudeau, Peter Strom, Naomi Uyama, Kevin St Laurent and Jo Hoffberg!

Full Weekend Workshop Package

The Great Southwest Lindyfest is a weekend workshop that brings extraordinary swing dance instructors into the area to teach Lindy Hop and related dances. This workshop is designed for Lindy Hop dancers at the Beginner-Intermediate level and above. If you are brand new to swing dancing or Lindy Hop, we recommend you take the 2-day Beginner's Track or weekly lessons provided by the Houston Swing Dance Society.

The prices increase with the number of registrations, so make sure that you get in early to get the best price for Lindyfest!!

We're movin on up! We've got a great deal for you at the InterContinental Hotel! Not only do you get a $99 rate per night for up to 4 people per room, all of our classes will be located in the hotel ballrooms!

That means all the dances and all the classes all weekend will be at this luxury hotel!

The new hotel is located within minutes of great shopping and food at The Galleria and Uptown Park. The hotel even has a shuttle bus that can drop you off and pick you up.

Are you driving? We're offering Lindyfest attendees special parking rates for both overnight ($8) and day rate ($4)!

Don't forget to pack your swim suits! The 5th floor rooftop pool is calling your name!

The Entertainment

The Band
This one's gonna rock the house! The Lindyfest House Band will be the Gordon Webster Septet with featured vocalists Steven Mitchell and Naomi Uyama!!

The MC
Mr. Entertainment, himself, Andrew Thigpen, will once again be our MC for the weekend!

The DJs

DJ Ryan "Swifty" Swift will be our head DJ! Ryan's been swing dancing since 1998 and has been DJing for over a decade, spinning for numerous exchanges, dance camps, weekend workshops, We're happy to have him back in Houston playing for us all weekend!

Did you forget something?

Your personal manager is ready for you to add any additional items to your registration. So, if you forgot to add the buffet or t-shirt, now's your chance to make sure you get them before the workshop. We're sure to sell out of both! Buffet tickets are $14 each for Friday and Saturday night and t-shirts are $12-$15. By the way, check out our great shirts this year! You can access your personal manager page from the link in the confirmation email you received when you registered.

The Show

We're working on putting together a great show for you! We promise inspiring performance to knock your socks off!

The Show will start after the first band break, about 10:30pm, on Saturday night!

Getting to Houston

Have you already thought about how you're getting to Houston?? Let us offer some advice: Houston has two ariports that carry all the major airlines, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the William P. Hobby Airport (Hou). IAH is the hub for Continental Airlines and offer services to many major cities. Southwest Airlines predominantly serves the Hobby Airport. Both airports are a short drive into town with Hobby being the closer, yet smaller airport. IAH is located ~20 miles North of town on US-59, and Hobby is East of town on I-45S.

You can schedule airport transfer through SuperShuttle and they will pick you up at either airport and deliver you to the InterContental Hotel for ~$19 from Hobby and ~$21 from IAH.

Taxi rides to the hotel are ~$45-60 depending on the airport and final destination.

This year we're really excited to bring back Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five featuring Hilary Alexander for two blockbuster nights of swingin' music! They will be entertaining us at both Friday and Saturday evening dances and we can't wait to jam with them!!! Remember the "hat jam" last year?

Act soon if you want to pre-purchase your Lindyfest shirts! Pre-orders will only be taken until February 14th. If you've already registered and want to add a shirt, just log-in with your manager link. We'll also be selling Lindyfest t-shirts for $15 during the workshop! Save up those pennies to take home a pretty nice souvenir. We'll have men's and women's short and long sleeve shirts. Shirt styles and sizes will be limited, so make sure to pick yours up early!!

Lindyfest is in one week. One. Week.

If you're not already registered, don't even bother. Just kidding, you totally should. But you have to make it up to me. I trusted you. As a gesture of goodwill I'll allow you to pay for my late night buffet, which will be delicious and reasonably priced. (See what I did there)

Hotel Block Deal Extended!

Great news! The discounted Lindyfest hotel block has been extended until March 7th! Get on it!
You'll get a great $79 rate at the official event hotel!!! HSDS has secured a great hotel rate of $79/night at the Sheraton Brookhollow. This is the same location as all the evening and afterhours dances Thursday through Sunday. As an extra bonus for staying at the hotel, we'll be offering a shuttle service between the hotel and workshop location at the JCC. Be where the party's at all weekend long and reserve your room before it fills up!

Checking In

The Thursday Registration/Check-in will be located in the Magnolia Ballroom at the Sheraton Brookhollow and will be 12-2pm for the Thursday afternoon classes and re-open at 8pm later that night. We will be sending out your “boarding pass” that you can print and bring in to speed up the check-in process or have your photo ID.

Advanced Try-Outs

There are only TWO Advanced try-out sessions this year:

Friday 10am at JCC Gymnasium
and
Saturday 1:15pm at JCC Rm 122

Arrive at try-outs on time with your wristband already on your wrist. That means stop by the registration desk to check in before going to the try-outs.

You may also try out for the Master's track during the advanced try-outs. Please identify yourself to the judges before the process begins so they'll know to evaluate you with that in mind. Remember: You will only be judged on what you do during the try-outs, so make sure you bring your best. If you feel like you didn't do your best during the first try-out, try again for the next one.

You've been waiting so patiently...and here's your reward: The Lindyfest schedule is now onli ne!!! We've brought back the handy dandy schedule maker so you can pick and choose your personalized schedule and email till your heart's a flutter with joy!!

Saturday Evening Performance Update

Alright. So. Here's the deal. We've got too many great people coming to Lindyfest this year. It's put us in a bit of a spot, and so I hope you'll forgive us for taking...measures.

Having been forced into action by our amazing attendees, who, in their greed, couldn't stop themselves from being as awesome as possible, we have decided to add an extra day of performances. So here's what's going down.

Friday night will be a small show that starts with our Instructor Jam at 10:15pm and then the main event at 11pm

Saturday will be the mainer event with the Big Big Show, which starts at 10:45pm, and will knock your socks off if you're wearing them. Don't even ask me what'll happen to you if you aren't.

Sunday we will thank our unreasonably cool volunteers with a Volunteer Jam at 10:30pm, so come out and give it up for these wonderful people. And by give it up I mean throw your dance skills at them like some kind of cheap floozy. They love it when people do that.
Seriously, make sure you get in there and thank them. Lindyfest is %100 run by volunteers!

NOTE: All times in this section of the newsletter are Lindy Hop Standard Time (LHST), which is at least a half hour off the listed time.

Lunch!

Pre-Order your Lunches!! Don't want to waste your Lindyfest lunch hour waiting in line?? The Cafe at the J will take your pre-orders for lunch. You'll receive your order form in your registration packet for tasty goodness prepared fresh for your lunch. Fill them in, drop them off before 11am and when we break for class your order will be up first!! Remember, the Cafe will be closed all day Saturday! Friday and Sunday cafe hours are 8am-3:00pm.

Frankie Manning Tribute Classes

Last year we had a slew of amazing classes in tribute to Frankie, wherein instructors could express their love and respect for our late friend by sharing ideas, technique, or just plain silliness taken from or inspired by the ambassador of Lindy Hop. We'll be continuing this new tradition this year. Each class will be unique and worth attending! More info is here!

The Unforgettable Hampton Family

As a special treat we're going to be having an exclusive viewing of The Unforgettable Hampton Family on Saturday, followed by a Q&A session with Dawn Hampton and director Julie Cohen.

The film, a documentary, deals with the children of Deacon Clark Hampton's dream of turning his twelve children into performers in order get them onto the stage and out of poverty.

Getting to Houston

In case you need some help getting to the hotel from the airport here's some useful information:

The Houston Metro has introduced a new direct shuttle service into downtown Houston departing every 30 minutes for only ~~$15 each way~~. 2011 Update: Metro has dropped the price dramatically for it's shuttle service. The new one-way fare is just $4.50!

You can also schedule your ride through SuperShuttle and they will pick you up at either airport and deliver you to the Sheraton Brookhollow for ~$19 from Hobby and ~$21 from IAH.

Taxi rides to the hotel are ~$45-60 depending on the airport and final destination. Also, check out Houston's local discussion forum. It's a great place to coordinate these rides.

Lindyfest: March 10th-13th 2011!

Hello again from your friendly neighborhood Lindyfest team! We hope everyone had a blast at Lone Star last month, and that you're getting pumped. We sure as shootin' are!

As always, HSDS is proud to present our 2011 Lindyfest instructors: Dawn Hampton, Chazz Young, Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Virginie Jensen, Steven Mitchell, Ryan Francois, Jenny Thomas, Skye Humphries, Frida Segerdahl, Max Pitruzzella, Annie Trudeau, Peter Strom, Ramona Staffeld, Naomi Uyama, and Kevin St Laurent and Jo Hoffberg!

As you may or may not but definitely do recall, the unifying theme of our updates is surprising you, the viewer. In that vein we have some exciting (and needless to say, surprising) surprises to share with you this time!

One of those surprises is that we have procured Mr. Andrew Thigpen, that dashing young stallion, as MC for our 15th Lindyfestversary. Boom? Surprised!

S o you DID get kidnapped by pirates before you could register? Pft, told you so. Well, even though you missed the deadline for the $139 price, we love you enough to offer ONE MORE awesome deal (who am I kidding, the whole thing's a great deal). If you register before March 7th it's only $159!

Dedicated Aerials Track

If you haven't registered yet for the intermediate aerials track then I regret to inform you that the classes are now closed for that level. You can, however, email us to get placed on a waiting list. Who knows how many people will "suddenly" come down with the ague*, opening up that space just for you! Boom. Surprised :(

If you are more for the advanced aerials track *cue trumpets* then you'd better get on the ball, buster! Advanced level aerials is close to capacity, and won't stay open for long!

*Lindyfest and its staff and volunteers do not endorse or condone biological warfare for any reason, especially for the purpose of ensuring your spot in the aerials classes. ESPECIALLY if it involves the ague.

Beginner's Track

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest weekend.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction at the Sheraton Hotel March 12-13th, 2011.

Dance Pass

Dance passes are available now! They will also be sold at the door. The dance pass price is $80 for the entire weekend Thursday-Sunday. Below are the individual dance prices.

Lindyfest: March 10th-13th 2011!

Hello again from your friendly neighborhood Lindyfest team! We hope you're having a good new year and we want to help by sharing some exciting updates with you!

As always, HSDS is proud to present our 2011 Lindyfest instructors: Dawn Hampton, Chazz Young, Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Virginie Jensen, Steven Mitchell, Ryan Francois, Jenny Thomas, Skye Humphries, Frida Segerdahl, Max Pitruzzella, Annie Trudeau, Peter Strom, Ramona Staffeld and Kevin St Laurent and Jo Hoffberg!

15 is an important year for a growing event! We're learning how to drive, we're getting used to our changing bodies, we might be starting to think about college...
Anyway, since it's such a big deal, we plan to have even more fun and surprises than last year!

New-Dedicated Aerials Track

Two new Aerials Tracks will be offered for Intermediate and Advanced levels - $25 add on (will include at least 3 classes for your tracked level) Class sizes will be limited to 20 couples. You should plan to have your partner register.

Getting to Houston

Hous ton has two ariports that carry all the major airlines, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the William P. Hobby Airport (Hou). IAH is the hub for Continental Airlines and offers services to many major cities. Southwest Airlines predominantly serves the Hobby Airport. Both airports are a short drive into town with Hobby being the closer, yet smaller airport. IAH is located ~20 miles North of town on US-59, and Hobby is East and South of town on I-45S.

In case you need some help getting to the hotel from the airport here's some useful information:

The Houston Metro has introduced a new direct shuttle service into downtown Houston departing every 30 minutes for only $15 each way.

You can also schedule your ride through SuperShuttle and they will pick you up at either airport and deliver you to the Sheraton Brookhollow for ~$19 from Hobby and ~$21 from IAH.

Taxi rides to the hotel are ~$45-60 depending on the airport and final destination. Also, check out Houston's local discussion forum. It's a great place to coordinate these rides.

Thanks to the 400+ wonderful people for coming out to Lindyfest and making this a great weekend! Larry and I really enjoy putting this event on year after year and all the hard work pays off when we see everyone smiling and having a good time at Lindyfest. Of course we couldn't do this without all of our wonderful volunteers who make this event a joy to run!! Not to mention our crew of instructors, DJs and performers are not just fantastic at what they do, but amazing people to share the weekend with!

Lindyfest is just a few more days away and we've made some special additions to our jammed packed weekend workshop!!!

In case you haven't seen our 2010 workshop schedule, we now have the Lindyfest schedule posetd online!! We've brought back the handy dandy schedule maker so you can pick and choose your personalized schedule and email till your heart's a flutter with joy!!

Checking In

The Thursday Registration/Check-in will be located in the Magnolia Ballroom at the Sheraton Brookhollow and will start at 8pm. Please have your photo ID out to help speed along the process.

Thursday Evening Welcome Dinner Buffett

We want to extend our warmest welcome to you from the very start of the Lindyfest weekend! Before the workshops, dances and merriment, we're giving you guys a chance to fuel up and meet up with other Lindyfest goers! The Sheraton Brookhollow restaurant, Cimmeron, will be offering a $15 (+tax) all-you-can-eat dinner buffet (vegetarian options included). Stop by the Cimerro n from 6:30-9pm for the buffet goodness!

Join us for Dinner and a Movie

HSDS is sponsoring a special screening in our Dinner and a Movie series. Join us on Friday evening at 7pm in the Grand Ballroom for the 30 minute documentary, Frankie Manning: Never Stop Swinging. Director Julie Cohen and Producer Buddy Steves will be in attendance to introduce and take any questions. The Sheraton Brookhollow will have a "Movie Dinner Menu" with a selection of movie worthy munchies like hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and popcorn or you can bring your own meal to the screening. We'll follow the documentary with selected lindy hop clips from the classics to the new editions until 8:30 when we'll close the ballroom before the dancing begins at 9pm. Copies of Frankie Manning: Never Stop Swinging will be available for purchase in "The Shop" for $20.

On Sunday, join for clips from never before seen edits from the Frankie 95 Celebration! We can't say much more about this, than WOW! If you weren't there, you'll certainly feel like it after watching this footage!! This footage is also airing 7-8:30pm in the Grand Ballroom with the "Movie Dinner Menu."

Advanced Try-Outs

You asked for it, you got it! Advanced try-outs will be held as official "Jack and Jill" contests with competition numbers and judges scoring, to boot.

There are only TWO try-out sessions on the schedule: Friday, 10:00am in the JCC Gymnasium and Saturday at 1:15pm at the JCC Room 122.

Please arrive to the try-outs on time with your general registration wristband already on your wrist. This means you'll have to go to the main registration and check in first before you visit us in the try-out rooms, please.

You may also try-out for the Master's track during this time. Please identify yourself before the process begins so the judges know in advance to evaluate you for that track.

Remember, that you are judged only on what you do in that room for the try-outs. You have two opportunities for advanced try-outs in case you feel like you didn't perform up to your standards. Good luck to everyone!

Pre-Order your Lunches!!

Don't want to waste your lunch hour waiting in line?? The Cafe at the J will take your pre-orders for lunch You'll receive your order form in your registration packet for tasty goodness prepared fresh for your lunch. Fill them in, drop them off before 11am and when we break for class your order will be up first!! Remember, the Cafe will be closed all day Saturday! Friday cafe hours are 8am-3:00pm and Sunday cafe hours are from 8am-4pm.

Frankie Manning Tribute Class

We have all felt the loss of Frankie Manning last year just before his 95th birthday. HSDS would like to remember all of the joy that he brought to us each and every year of Lindyfest! So, we have asked all of our instructors to create a special class that focuses on the impact Frankie had on their dancing. It could be their favorite Frankie moves or inspirational moments. We hope everyone can make it to some of these classes as each one is unique. Let's all share in the joy that Frankie gave to us in the Lindy Hop.

Special Screening of Frankie Manning: Never Stop Swinging Documentary

The HSDS produced documentary, Frankie Manning: Never Stop Swinging, will be screened Friday, March 12th at 7pm in the Sheraton Grand Ballroom with Director Julie Cohen in attendance.

Legend meets Lindy Hop in this 30-minute “documentary of dance” featuring Frankie Manning, a man who, in the words of director Julie Cohen, “truly LIVED every moment of his life.”

The documentary features the last major interview of Frankie Manning before his death, as well as precious archival footage of his dancing from the 1930’s to 2009 in New York, Hollywood, Sweden, France, Italy and Singapore. Footage highlights include scenes of Manning’s birthday parties, where he danced with one woman for each year he’d been alive, the legendary dance scene choreographed and headlined by Manning for the film “Hellzapoppin,” and the phenomenal duet with his 76-year-old son, Chazz, himself a professional dancer. Frankie was a born storyteller, with a huge smile and an even bigger laugh.

Getting to Houston

Houston has two ariports that carry all the major airlines, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the William P. Hobby Airport (Hou). IAH is the hub for Continental Airlines and offer services to many major cities. Southwest Airlines predominantly serves the Hobby Airport. Both airports are a short drive into town with Hobby being the closer, yet smaller airport. IAH is located ~20 miles North of town on US-59, and Hobby is East of town on I-45S.

In case you need some help getting to the hotel from the airport here's some useful information.

The Houston Metro has introduced a new direct shuttle service into downtown Houston departing every 30 minutes for only $15 each way.

You can also schedule your ride through SuperShuttle and they will pick you up at either airport and deliver you to the Sheraton Brookhollow for ~$19 from Hobby and ~$21 from IAH.

Taxi rides to the hotel are ~$45-60 depending on the airport and final destination. Also, check out Houston's local discussion forum is a great place to coordinate these rides.

Lindyfest DJs Announced

Beginner's Track

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest weekend.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction at the Sheraton Hotel.

Dance Pass

Dance passes are now available for online purchase! Dance passes will also be sold at the door. The dance pass price is $80 for the entire weekend Thursday-Sunday. Below are the individual dance prices.

$10-Thursday 9pm-3am
$35-Friday 9pm-5am
$15-Afterhours 1-5am
$35-Saturday 9pm-5am
$15-Afterhours 2-5am
$10-Sunday 8:00pm-3am

Dances are included in the price of the workshop. If you registered for the full weekend you do not need to purchase a dance pass.

Don't forget the breakfast buffet! We will be selling tickets for the evening breakfast spread for Friday and Saturday night for only $10. The food will be rolling out from midnight to 2am. Purchasing buffet tickets on site may not be possible if we sell out in online orders.

I can't believe that it's really time again for another rockin' year of Lindyfest!!! As always, we want to keep you in the loop with our fancy newsletter so you can start preparing for an incredible time!

Hotel Room Block Expires March 1st!

Make sure to book your rooms soon before the M arch 1st deadline!!! You'll get a great $79 rate at the official event hotel!!! The Sheraton Brookhollow hotel is the official location for all the Lindyfest dances Thursday through Sunday. As an extra bonus for staying at the hotel, we'll be offering a free shuttle service between the hotel and workshop location at the JCC. Be where the party's at all weekend long and reserve your room before it fills up!

Don't forget to pack your swim-suits! The average high for Houston is a comfy, non-snowy 73F!!
