HSDS Happenings!

All HSDS classes are every Sunday at the Melody Club. Click here to view our weekly class schedule. We offer lessons for beginner to advanced dancers. No partner necessary! Our weekly Sunday dance is 8:30-10:30pm following the lessons and is open to everyone! NEW beginner's lindy hop series (Lindy 1a) starts the first Sunday of every month at 7:30pm!!

Lindyfest is on it's way! HSDS is proud to announce that Lindyfest will be held March 15th-18th, 2012! Registration is now open! Price points increase as more people get registered so make sure to sign up as early as you can to get the best deal on this fantastic workshop!

Lindyfest is an intensive and fun lindy hop weekend workshop jammed packed with classes for all dance levels, soul sessions with living legends, hot performances and four endless nights of dancing. January's Free 5th Sunday Dance and Lesson!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!! We hope you danced away 2011 and welcomed in the new year! It's time to start chipping away at those New Year's resolutions. And if this year you resolved to learn to swing dance, congratulations, we're glad you picked HSDS as the best place to do that! If your resolution is to dance more, then great, we have a lot of opportunities to help you dance more, imporve your skills and have fun doing it!! Whatever the reason that brings you to HSDS, we're elated that you've found us and included dancing in your busy schedules! We hope to see you all out on the dance floor!!

Lonestar Championships is January 12-15th!

Austin, TX, Lonestar Championships - January 12-15th, 2012.
Lone Star Championships is a competition weekend dedicated to social dancing with a party atmosphere. All of the contests are social dance competitions. No stress on your part, no need to prepare a routine, just come enjoy the weekend. Spontaneous, creative, amazing.

Lonestar is really about the joy of dance and celebrating all levels of dancers. Competitions are a great way of focusing your energy on becomming a better dancer, and they're not just reserved for the elite or those who want to become professionals. At Lonestar, some of the most fun comps are the Newcommers, where you get to see or participate in the growth of new dancers. It's electric! So, focus your energy and take a leap into this great opportunity! If you're still not ready for competitions, that's ok too. There are plenty of classes and great dancers at the event to elevate your skills! No one ever became a great dancer by sitting on the couch. So, get out there and have some fun!

HSDS Dancer Wins Choreography Contest!

Local Houston dancers created two great sets of choreography for the Hawkeye Swing Festival in April. A total of seven submissions were online and open for voting with the winner receiving the opportunity to teach their unique choreography at the workshop. HSDS's own, Katiebeth Lee with her "Sinner's Strut" was the winning submission! You won't have to wait until April to l earn this fun dance though, Katiebeth will be bringing it to you every Sunday in January in the elective class at 7:30pm.

Wednesday Night Music Mixer at The Continental Club

Every week, the Paul Ramirez Band plays the Continental Club in Houston. It's a great opportunity for you and your friends to get your mid-week dance fix!

The music starts around nine with The Jazz Marauders playing some swanky grooves to get your head right, then the incomparable Paul Ramirez Band takes the stage around ten, with some great blues/rock jams to get your feet moving. There's even a facebook page for dancers!

The Texas A&M Swing Cats are hosting a new and exciting workshop, Aggie Stomp on December 2-4, 2011! It's featuring ALL TEXAS INSTRUCTORS: Brian Eley, Shannon Jabczynski, Stephen Jean, Joanna Lucero, Maggie Martin, and Josue Romero!! Also, start working on your competition face, they'll be having some great comps with great prizes to your favorite events!! Registration is open!

Are you ready for Lights in the Heights? HSDS dancers return to this great neighborhood event, December 10th 6-9pm. This year's location is at 722 Woodland Street. We'll be playing all your favorite swing tunes and dancing outdoors to help usher in this festive season!

Lindyfest is March 15-18th

Lindyfest is on it's way! HSDS is proud to announce that Lindyfest will be held March 15th-18th, 2012! Registration will open in mid-December and we'll have some great early bird registration pricing available! But there will only be a limited number available. So, make sure you're in the loop by signing up for our Lindyfest newsletter, as we'll announce registration opening there first!

Also, we are excited to announce that Lindyfest will be moving locations to the beautiful and spacious Intercontinental Hotel! But wait, we're also moving all the classes there, too! So, no more bus rides and (hopefully) no more overturned-oil-tanker-traffic-jams!

HSDS Board Nominations

HSDS is taking nominations for our Board of Directors. This group of seven elected members is responsible for bringing you great events like our annual workshop Lindyfest, weekend workshops, Harvest Moon Ball, as well a s shaping our regular classes and dances.

The Houston Swing Dance Society is an organization of dedicated individuals who have a common appreciation and love of swing dancing and the Swing Dance Era. We are proud to be a part of the local arts community that makes Houston a richer place to live and visit.

Since its inception HSDS has been governed by a board of directors whose members are actively involved in all aspects of the organization. All day-to-day operations of HSDS are under the supervision of a seven member Board of Directors who have been elected in the past two years.

If you are a current HSDS member who would like to contribute to the future of HSDS please contact us to be added to the ballot. There are four open Board Member seats that we are looking to fill this year!

HSDS Board Nominations

Yes, we'll be open November 27th

Enjoy your turkey or tofurkey all you want, because on Sunday night we'll be dancing it all off! HSDS will be open November 27th for all your friends, family and out-of-town guests to head on over and hang out with us as we contiune the feast on our feet!

Hangar Dance, November 12th

The CenTex Wing of the Commemorative Air Force is holding their annual 50's WW-II USO-styled hangar dance November 12th in San Marcos. The live music will be provided by Sentimental Journey, plus they'll have dance and costume contests, an antique picture booth, lots refreshments and a catered bar-b-q. Tickets are still available and they're expecting another large turnout. We hope you can join them on Veteran's Day weekend, the dinner beings Saturday at 6pm, with the dance to follow at 7:30. Come for both and enjoy the entire evening.

Performance Team Try-Outs

Everyone is welcome to give it a go at our performance team try-outs Sunday October 9th, 5:30-6:30pm at the Melody Club. The B-team is officially transitioning to the PrepCats, a true feeder program for dancers who'd like to work towards becoming HepCats. As a member of the PrepCats, you'll learn new routines, improve your social dance and performance skills and work on solo and jam circle techniques! The PrepCats aren't looking for perfection (just yet) but you should have a good handle on the basics (swing-out, circle, charleston), dedication and an eagerness to learn and be a part of a team. The PrepCats will have performance opportunities within HSDS and out in the Houston community as ambassadors of HSDS and the swing community.

Houston's Harvest Moon Ball is October 22nd!

Mark your calendars for Houston's Harvest Moon Ball a celebration to honor the spirit of dedicated dancers in Houston! This year's Harvest Moon Ball will be held October 22nd, 2011. Houston's Harvest Moon Ball is a collaboration of two dance groups HSDS and the Rice Social Dance Society. It's a night to wear your sharpest clothing and dance the night away with great live music, performances, just-for-fun dance competitions and more!

We are happy to announce that the Old School Swing Band will provide the live entertainment! Tickets are on sale now and are $15.50 online or $20 at the door. Beginner lesson will be provided at 7pm and the dance will be at 8pm-midnight. RSVP on our Facebook page.

Free 5th Sunday, October 30th

It's time for scary good time at HSDS! Come on out and bring your friends, family and co-workers along to the always popular 5th Sun day FREE dance and beginner's lesson!! We offer a free beginner's lesson at 7pm followed by a super-fun dance from 8:30-10:30pm! No partner or previous dance experience necessary! We'll teach you the moves to get you out on the floor that night and have a great time!

Tis the season to break out the costumes for our costume contest! Great prizes include discounts on Lindyfest registration and HSDS classes! This year prizes will be given for originality and creativity!

Guys and Dolls

This swing era musical will be the cat's meow at the Hobby Center this September 27th-Oct 9th. Guys and Dolls is about a group of gamblers, gangsters and gals in the seedy, after-hours underworld of the city that never sleeps. Featuring all new scenery and filled with hits like “Luck Be A Lady” and “Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,” this show is one the whole family will enjoy – you can bet on it!

September's elective is Advanced Lindy Hop Technique with Quang! Come out on Sundays in September at 7:30pm to push the boundaries of your skills! New Year's isn't the only time for resolutions! Are your wallets drained from buying all those new school clothes and text books or from keeping the a/c cranked down enough to not melt away? Then, we've got a great special for you! Become a member of HSDS or renew your current membership in the month of September and you'll get an entire month of class for FREE!! Memberships are $40 for adults and $25 for students. When you renew online or at the front desk, you'll get to choose which month of class you'd like for free (a $20 value). New memberships can only be taken in person. Limit 1 per person. What's better than saving some cold, hard cash?? Dancing with your friends for free!

We'll be open for classes and dancing for our regular hours on Labor Day weekend! A new series of Beginning Lindy Hop will kick off the month! We hope you can join us for another great month at HSDS!!

Making Houston Proud

HSDS is proud of all the wonderful dancers who competed in the largest, fiercest International Lindy Hop Championships to date!! While we didn't take home the gold, we're very proud of all the strong dancing and heart and soul you guys put into the weekend! Thanks for representing Houston!!

Guys and Dolls

This swing era musical will be the cat's meow at the Hobby Center this September 27th-Oct 9th. Guys and Dolls is about a group of gamblers, gangsters and gals in the seedy, after-hours underworld of the city that never sleeps. Featuring all new scenery and filled with hits like &ldq uo;Luck Be A Lady” and “Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,” this show is one the whole family will enjoy – you can bet on it!

August's Elective is Dean Collins' Styling

Don't worry if you can't remember the days when there were the "style-wars" of lindy hop. It was all settled peacefully when some swing club made the ironic t-shirts, "I dance (fill in the blank) style." Now we can benefit from learning about and incorporating different styles and techniques into our lindy hop. Join us Sunday's at 7:30pm for the August elective and learn about what made Dean Collins' style so unique.

HSDS Happenings!

Two Jazz Nights in August at Miller Outdoor Theater

Get your toes tappin' to music from Fats Waller at the Miller Outdoor Theater on Friday, August 12th 8:30-10:30pm. The Tony Award-winning musical that honors the legacy of Fats Waller comes to Miller. Song after song, complete immersion into a time when every woe and joy was best expressed in song. This is a free ticketed event for the covered seating area and as always, free open seating on the hill.

On August 27th, The National performing Artists, Conrad O.Johnson Regional Youth Orchestra shares the spotlight with The Shellman, jazz great trombonist Steve Turre of Saturday Night Live in "A Tribute to the Big Band Era: Igniting The Flame; Passing The Torch". The exciting show will feature original compositions and arrangements by our late Founder, Conrad O. Johnson, as well as other big band greats, such as Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington.

HSDS at the House of Blues on August 23rd

We're just getting word that the Houston House of Blues Foundation Room will be having a special swing night on August 23rd, 7:30-10:30pm. HSDS will be there to offer a special membership promotion. There will be a live band, drink specials and a special event menu! We'll keep you updated at hsds.org with more details as they come.

Alexandria, VA-International Lindy Hop Championships-Aug 25-28th. We were astonished at the overwhelming positive response to ILHC last year and happy to have several hundred dancers in attendance! 2011 will bring 4-days of dance experiences that include amazing competitions, high-level workshops, thought provoking LED talks and tons of social dancing! Come join us and watch the best of the best Lindy Hoppers in the world strut their s tuff!

New Orleans, LA - New Orleans Swing Dance Festival and The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Sept 28-Oct 3rd. 2011, Dont' miss an exciting weekend of "no holds barred" lindy hop competitions. This event is full of great live music and exciting dancing.

June's Elective is Trankey Do!

June's elective at HSDS is the Trankey Do! What's that you say?? Don't know what the Trankey Do is? Come out on Sundays at 7:30pm in June to learn this classic jazz dance choreography from the 1940s. You'll learn classic jazz steps like the "Mess Around", "Cake Walk" and "Fall Off the Log" and have a great time putting them all together and dancing this group line dance at the conclusion of the class. Here's a vintage look at the Trankey Do and a modern recreation.

Congratulations to HSDS's Jerry Foote

In carrying on the dreams of Frankie Manning to have everyone in the world doing the lindy hop, the Frankie Manning Foundation announced the following winners of the Ambassador Scholarship 2011. These people will be going to Herrang Dance Camp this summer:  

International Ambassadors:

Swing Out of Town!

Texas:
Dallas-DSDS is having a workshop with Mikey Pedroza and Nikki Marvin June 3-5th. The workshop will offer both Beginner & Intermediate tracks and will cover Lindy hop and Charleston. Additionally there will be an instructors choice advanced class offered. More details coming soon.

Austin-The Engine Room-Live jazz music from the '20s-'40s era by some of Austin's best musicians. There's space to dance, play ping pong, foosball, or just hang out and listen to the awesome music in a cozy community center. BYOB and bring some tips for the band!

Frankie Manning Lindy Hop Legacy Fund

The Frankie Manning Lindy Hop Legacy Fund, which came into being during the planning stages of the Frankie Manning's 95th Birthday Festival, is offering its first Scholarship to Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden this Summer.

The scholarships are intended to empower exceptional students of Lindy Hop who come from communities that have little or no exposure to Lindy Hop so that they may take what they learn back to their community of origin to help the spread of Lindy Hop.

The successful candidate will demonstrate great desire, natural ability and leadership qualities but may not have access to learning resources or the financial means to pursue and develop their dancing to its full potential.

In the Mood...for Dance on April 29th

Head over to the Miller Outdoor Theater on April 29th, 8pm for a dance exhibition, In the Mood…for Dance, by the Core Performance Company with live music from The Billie Ledbetter Orchestra. In the Mood…for Dance is an exhilarating and enjoyable dance sampler celebrating the music of the Big Band Era, America’s romantic era of popular music, 1935-1945 played live on stage by The Billie Ledbetter Orchestra. Sue Schroeder and CORE Performance Company will present new works inspired by this era’s intrinsically danceable music, together with guests jhon r. stronks, Jane Weiner with Hope Stone Dance, and Rebecca French with FrenetiCore.

Music of the Big Band Era, including songs such as "Jump, Jive and Wail," "Straighten up and Fly Right" and "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," inspires works by these four exciting and recognized choreographers in a suite of entertaining, fun and uplifting dances. In the Mood…for Dance is a great opportunity to gather your family and friends to enjoy an evening of swinging dance entertainment. Complimentary tickets for this performance are available through the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office prior to the show. Admission is free, but tickets to the covered area seating must be picked up through the Miller box office

Free 5th Sunday Dance!

Summer vacation is just around the corner. Start pl anning your Summer-fun now! Why not take our Free Beginner's Lindy Hop lesson on May 29th to get you started? Class is from 7-8:30 and is followed by the dance from 8:30-10:30. No partner needed and no previous dance experience required. We specialize in two-left-feet!

Unwind at Nouveau Art Bar

Dance to Support the Fight Against Cancer - May 21st

Feel good about yourself and have a great night dancing, too on May 21st at SSQQ. A fellow Houston dancer is dedicated to supporting the fight against leukemia and lymphoma by raising money through dance. LLS Cancer Stomp is a fusion swing, salsa and blues dance benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They'll have live music by the Ezra Charles Band, plus salsa and blues rooms.

So, why go?

Because every 4 minutes, one person is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Over 130,000 people are estimated to be diagnosed with a blood cancer this year alone. This accounts for around 9% of new cancer diagnoses in one year. That's a lot of people to dance for.
The LLS is also responsible for funding research which led to GLEEVEC, VELCADE and RITUXIN... all life saving drugs which have pioneered the way we treat cancer and reduced a myriad of terrible side effects that treatment can cause. Not to mention, the LLS invested $72 million in blood cancer research.

Minneapolis, MN-Midwest Lindy Fest-May 6-8th-Midwest Lindyfest 2011 is shaping up to be the biggest and best ever. We're adding more live music, more instructors, more classes, more fun, and more excitement. Our lead band, Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators, are well known across the Lindy Land - We are very excited to have them this year. There will be FOUR live music classes this year. Yup, we're excited to bring all this to you and we hope that you come and make the event more exciting than anyone can possibly imagine. Instructors include: Skye Humphries Marie Nahnfeldt, Peter Strom, Naomi Uyama, Mike Roberts, Laura Glaess, Mike Faltesek, and Adam Boehmer.

Thanks for supporting Lindyfest!

A BIG thank you to everyone who came out to support Lindyfest this past weekend! The weekend was jam packed with killer performances, inspiring classes and some truly amazing music and dancing!

Lindyfest is a completely non-profit event that is supported 100% by volunteers. Without such dedicated volunteers who share the vision of what Lindyfest can be all of the greatness would not happen. Lindyfest Registration Closes March 7th at Midnight

The 15th annual Lindyfest workshop is March 10-13th 2011 and is shaping up to be a great one! Lindyfest is an intensive and fun lindy hop weekend workshop jammed packed with classes for all dance levels, soul sessions with living legends, hot performances and four endless nights of dancing. Lindyfest brings in hundreds of dancers from all across the globe to learn lindy hop from the masters and experience the excitement of Lindy Hop, all here in Houston.

Beginner's Crash Course March 12-13th

HSDS is once again offering a special Beginner's Track Crash Course for people looking to start the ir journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest weekend. In a very personalized setting, we start at the beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction at the Sheraton Hotel plus entrance into the Saturday evening dance, which includes live music from Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five and our Big Saturday Night Show. Remember: March 13th All Classes are Canceled-Come to LIndyfest Instead!

As we will all be at Lindyfest working with great instructors to improve our dancing, all levels of classes AND the Sunday night dance on March 13th are canceled. Don't fret, you can still dance with us all weekend long at the Sheraton Brookhollow. If you've paid for the month at HSDS, the Sunday night dance is Free! All other dances can be paid for individually (on the night of the dance) or you can purchase an all dance pass for $85.

We'll be back to our normal schedule the rest of the month, but our dancing will be anything but normal! Watch out as our dancers improve leaps and bounds over the Lindyfest weekend!

So you won't be able to make it to the workshop this year, but don't fear, you can still come out and join us for the dances! You won't want to miss the big nights on Friday and Saturday. We'll have tons of inspiring performances and hundreds of dancers to choose from!
